Description
Preclinical Alzheimer's Disease (PCAD) is a silent, long-term phase of Alzheimer’s biology, detectable only through advanced tests. While it carries risk, not everyone progresses to dementia, and early detection is key for future preventive strategies. The symposium will highlight the earliest stage of the disease, when biological changes such as amyloid plaque buildup and tau tangle formation are already occurring in the brain, but no cognitive symptoms like memory loss or confusion have appeared. This phase can last years to decades before symptoms develop, and in some cases, people may never progress to dementia. The early changes to the brain in preclinical AD can be very subtle. As medical professionals do not screen for preclinical AD, they usually only notice these changes in experimental research or when a person has diagnostic tests for another reason. This symposium on Preclinical Alzheimer’s Disease (PCAD) will address physicians’ limited knowledge of the biological changes, emerging biomarkers, risk factors, and evolving diagnostic criteria associated with Alzheimer’s disease before noticeable cognitive symptoms appear.

Objectives
- Describe the biological changes that occur years before the onset of clinical symptoms, including amyloid and tau pathology using advances in biomarker detection and diagnostic technologies, including blood-based biomarkers, cerebrospinal fluid testing, and neuroimaging techniques.
- Discuss the importance of general health for healthy brain aging (e.g. vision, hearing, dental health, immunizations, diet/ultra processed food, sleep) and participation in clinical trials focused on PCAD.
- Consider Multisensory Integration (MSI) and demonstrate its importance in aging research, cognitive impairment/preclinical AD and introduce a technology-based early biomarker for cognitive impairment (Catch U).
