Objectives

1. Define and stage acute kidney injury (AKI) and review current diagnostic criteria and emerging biomarkers.
2. Describe the prevalence, morbidity and mortality associated with AKI in the ICU.
3. Outline common mechanisms of injury and risk factors in critical illness.
4. Review the relationship between intravascular volume and renal perfusion and injury
5. Highlight the importance of defining pre-load responsiveness and venous congestion and reviewing bedside intravascular tools that can mitigate AKI.
