Description
This session will offer faculty practical strategies for mentoring student research across all training levels. Participants will examine the mentor’s roles as advisor, teacher, role model, and advocate, and learn best practices such as aligning as aligning expectations, fostering independence, and modeling professionalism and research integrity. The session will address tailoring projects to the trainee’s level, managing common challenges (e.g., delays, authorship, IRB issues), and leveraging institutional resources at Stony Brook Medicine to support successful, rewarding mentoring relationships.

Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Define the principles and value of research mentorship for medical students, residents, and fellows, and articulate the mentor’s roles as advisor, teacher, role model, and advocate.
- Apply best practices for effective mentorship, including aligning expectations, providing structured guidance and open communication, fostering independence, and modeling professionalism and research integrity.
- Implement practical strategies to guide and track trainee research projects across levels of learner experience, tailoring expectations for students, residents, and fellows.
- Recognize and address common challenges in mentoring research, such as stalled projects, IRB delays, and authorship conflicts, using evidence-based approaches and real-world solutions.
- Leverage institutional resources at Stony Brook Medicine—including mentorship infrastructure, IRB processes, and data access tools—to support successful trainee research and mentor development.
