Description
Generally established submission criteria, sectioning placental diagnostic terms were discussed by an international group of pathologists specializing in placental examination. The results from this meeting were published subsequently, however they were not detailed. A multi-authored book is now in press to fully describe the findings. Changes related to submission and handling of placentas will be presented and the most important diagnostic changes in terminology.

Objectives
1) Understand clinical settings when the placenta should be submitted for complete pathologic evaluation
2) Know the appropriate methods for proper sectioning of the placenta
3) Understand the difference between lesions of fetal and maternal vascular perfusion
