Application of Medical Training to the Evaluation of Child Development: Don’t Just Hide Behind a Screen

Objectives
• Describe how child development is the basic science of pediatric medicine.
• Define developmental delay, dissociation, and deviation.
• Take advantage of rigorous medical training and accumulated clinical experience to address developmental-behavioral concerns the same way any other presenting medical concern is addressed, rather than relying exclusively on developmental screening checklists
• Describe the spectrum (within developmental streams) and the continuum (across developmental streams) of developmental-behavioral diagnoses
