Description

Plastic Surgery topics are presented by experts in their fields and are selected as highly relevant and important to the development of a current base of medical knowledge necessary to maintain a high level of care. These presentations are intended to introduce resident, faculty and medical students the most current and accepted approaches to the discipline of Plastic Surgery including medical problem solving, surgical skills, and new techniques in diagnosis and treatment.

Objectives

Medical Knowledge
I. Anatomy/Physiology/Embryology
Goal: The resident will acquire detailed knowledge about the anatomy, physiology and embryology of the palate and the causes of clefting of the palate.
Learning Objectives:
1. Embryology of facial development
2. Anatomy hard and soft palate, oropharynx, nasopharynx
3. Physiology of normal palate function
4. Abnormal anatomy of cleft palate
5. Effect on speech, swallowing
II. Congenital Disorders
Goal: The resident will acquire understanding of the disorders that are associated with clefts of the palate.
Learning Objectives:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the anomalies that can be associated with cleft of the palate.
2. Discuss the embryological etiology of these anomalies.
3. Be familiar with growth and development of the facial skeleton secondary to cleft of the palate.
Patient Care
Goal: The resident will provide comprehensive care to patients with cleft of the palate.
Learning Objectives:
1. Perform a comprehensive head and neck exam on initial evaluation.
2. Treatment plan in the context of team care for these patients.
3. Provide surgical alternatives for the care of the patient with cleft palate.
4. Follow postoperative evaluation for fistula formation, velopharyngeal competence, and facial growth.
5. Coordinate multidisciplinary care
