Description

The purpose of the Symposium is to educate community physicians, dentists and numerous specialists on the importance of a team approach to the care of patients with lip, palate or craniofacial anomalies.  Many different surgeries and procedures can be done in coordination with one another to address these issues.

Objectives

  • Describe the Cleft Palate Center and how different specialties can make use of out service.
  • Coordinate the necessary care for patients with Cleft Lip/Palat and Craniofacial Animalities with other physicians, dentists and specialists to assure the appropriate treatment is being given.  
  • Identify these patients and the different specialist referrals that may be necessary.
  • Review the different diagnoses that may go along with these birth defects.
  • Develop the most effective treatment plan for these patients and be able to monitor that the patient and his/her family are following this plan.
  • Examine the role each member of the Cleft Palate Craniofacial Center plays in the care of the child.
  • Discuss the timing of medical, surgical and dental intervention necessary in the care of children with Cleft Lip and/or Palate from birth through adolescence.
  • Identify the basic etiology, pathophysiology and the treatment modalities of Cleft Lip and Palate.
