Description
This symposium will increase knowledge and improve performance of Medical Staff Members, Residents, Nurses, social workers and other Healthcare personnel when working with patients who have addiction dependency. Gaps in knowledge regarding medications, ethical and legal practices, pain and symptom management will be addressed by the presenters thereby giving the audience greater understanding and knowledge.

Objectives
- Comprehend addiction as a disorder that involves elements of both impulsivity and compulsivity.
- Be familiar with the three stages of addiction: binge/intoxication, withdrawal/negative affect and preoccupation/anticipation.
- Have a better understanding of ways to treat pain.
- Be aware of the legal and ethical issues when prescribing opiates to patients.
