Objectives

1) Recognize that depressive symptoms and major depressive disorder (MDD) are prevalent in patients with chronic kidney disease and end-stage kidney disease and are associated with adverse clinical outcomes.

2) Recognize that some of the symptoms of depression may overlap with the somatic symptoms of advanced chronic kidney disease and identify the screening tools and validated cutoffs for MDD in patients with chronic kidney disease and end-stage kidney disease.

3) Identify the potential adverse effects associated with commonly used antidepressant medication classes in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease.

4) Review the evidence for treatment of MDD in patient populations with kidney disease.
