Description

Plastic Surgery topics are presented by experts in their fields and are selected as highly relevant and important to the development of a current base of medical knowledge necessary to maintain a high level of care. These presentations are intended to introduce resident, faculty and medical students the most current and accepted approaches to the discipline of Plastic Surgery including medical problem solving, surgical skills, and new techniques in diagnosis and treatment.

Dates and Times

Start: 5/26/2021 6:30 AM
End: 5/26/2021 8:30 AM

Objectives

  1. Recall the anatomy of the flexor muscles and associated tendons, their insertion and their function.
  2. Describe the different zones of flexor tendons and the implication of injury in those zones.
  3. Diagram the pulley system and distinguish critical components for tendon function.
  4. Formulate a method to accurately assess individual tendon function (FDS,FDP,etc) during patient evaluation while predicting the patient exam findings for injury to each individual tendon.
  5. Recognize the suturing characteristics that lead to successful flexor tendon repair (core and epitendinous suture techniques & principles)
  6. Contrast the indications for one-stage vs. two-stage flexor tendon reconstruction
  7. Outline the different rehabilitation protocols for tendon repairs based on zone and strength of repair.
  8. Formulate comprehensive treatment plans from the time of injury unti lcompletion of care for patients with injuries in each zone of flexor tendons.
  9. Explain potential risks and complications following flexor tendon repair.
  10. Describe the anatomy and zones of injury of the extensor tendons of the hand and wrist.
  11. Understand the functional extensor tendon anatomy and how it relates to injury patterns and treatments.
  12. Understand the surgical techniques for direct tendon repair in the management of injuries to the extensor tendons.
  13. Formulate general rehabilitation plans relative to specific zones of injury.
  14. Manage acute and chronic mallet deformity.
  15. Describe the management of open and closed boutonniere injuries acutely and chronically.
  16. Identify and treat injuries of the MP joint (zone V) including the common presentation of this injury as the "fight bite".
  17. Recognize and manage sagittal band injuries of the extensor tendon.
  18. Learn to correlate functional deficits on physical exam with anatomic knowledge in developing a treatment plan.
