Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapies in Pediatrics: General Principles and Future Possibilities

Objectives

1. To identify the primary indications for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in pediatric patients, differentiate between autologous and allogeneic transplant approaches, and recognize which malignant and non-malignant conditions commonly require transplant referral during childhood.
2. To describe the key phases of the transplant process (conditioning, transplantation, and engraftment), identify common acute and chronic complications including graft-versus-host disease, and understand the role of supportive care measures in managing transplant-related toxicities.
3. To explain the basic mechanisms of newer cellular therapies such as CAR-T cell therapy and gene therapy approaches, recognize their current applications in pediatric oncology and immunodeficiency disorders, and understand how these therapies may expand treatment options for previously incurable conditions.
