May 6th, 2026 1.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit Hours
Description
This workshop empowers faculty and learners to integrate foundational knowledge, structured inquiry, and emerging technologies in support of evidence‐based practice. Participants will engage with library‐based and open research resources, point‐of‐care tools, and explore how AI can enhance efficient information seeking and critical appraisal. The session also examines the purpose and implementation of Self‐Directed Learning (SDL) in medical education, highlighting how intentional use of assignments, rubrics, and feedback scaffolds the development of lifelong learning skills. Within this framework, the PICO method (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) is introduced as a flexible approach for formulating focused, answerable clinical or educational questions. Participants will further apply these concepts by developing a Critically Appraised Topic (CAT) using the CEBMa 11‐step methodology and distinguishing CATs from systematic reviews in terms of scope, rigor, and practical application.
Dates and Times
Start: 5/6/2026 12:00 PM
End: 5/6/2026 1:00 PM
Objectives
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Explain the educational rationale for integrating self-directed learning (SDL) into the preclinical curriculum and discuss how this could be adapted to other learners.
- Describe how SDL aligns with LCME standards, AAMC EPAs, and institutional learning objectives.
- Describe and operationalize a Critically Appraised Topic (CAT) using the CEBMa 11‐step methodology to answer a focused clinical or educational question.
- Differentiate CATs from systematic reviews by identifying design constraints that affect comprehensiveness and internal validity, including selection bias and appraisal depth.
- Identify appropriate resources for locating current, high-quality biomedical literature.
- Develop a working knowledge of key tools for efficiently answering clinical questions.
