a comprehensive clinical approach to managing Periprosthetic Joint Infection (PJI)

Objectives

1. Understand the pathogenesis of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI)Explain the relationship between bacterial burden, biofilm formation, and host immune threshold, including endogenous vs exogenous sources.

2. Identify and optimize modifiable risk factors for infectionApply evidence-based preoperative and intraoperative strategies to reduce infection risk in hip and knee arthroplasty patients.

3. Recognize and diagnose PJI using clinical, laboratory, and imaging criteriaInterpret key diagnostic thresholds (ESR/CRP, synovial WBC count, PMN%) and utilize advanced tests such as alpha-defensin and MRI appropriately.

4. Formulate an evidence-based treatment plan for PJIDifferentiate management strategies based on timing (acute vs chronic), including DAIR, one-stage, and two-stage revision, with clear surgical principles and goals.
