Description

Plastic Surgery topics are presented by experts in their fields and are selected as highly relevant and important to the development of a current base of medical knowledge necessary to maintain a high level of care. These presentations are intended to introduce resident, faculty and medical students the most current and accepted approaches to the discipline of Plastic Surgery including medical problem solving, surgical skills, and new techniques in diagnosis and treatment.

Objectives

Medical Knowledge 

A. Anatomy/Physiology/Embryology 

Goals: The resident will achieve a detailed knowledge of the anatomy, physiology, and embryology of the upper extremity and will utilize this knowledge in the complete management of the hand, arm, and brachial plexus. 

Learning Objectives: 1. Describe in detail the anatomy and physiology of the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones of the hand as they pertain to hand and finger fracture pathophysiology. 

2. Utilizes the radiologic techniques for evaluation of hand fractures, including plain films and CT scan. 

3. Recite the principles of upper extremity biomechanics as they pertain to hand fractures.

B. Trauma Goals: The resident will understand the principles of diagnosis and treatment of extremity trauma and perform comprehensive management of metacarpal and phalangeal fractures. Learning Objectives: 

1. Recite the principles and applications of diagnostic techniques for the evaluation of hand fractures. 

2. Describe the techniques for operative management of hand and finger fractures/dislocations, their indications and contraindications, and their possible complications and the treatment thereof. 3. Explain the indications for, contraindications to, and techniques in nonoperative management of hand and finger fractures.
