Description
Social Medicine is a field of medicine that seeks to implement social care of the patient through understanding how social and economic conditions impact health, disease and the practice of medicine. It also fosters conditions in which this understanding can lead to a healthier society. All practitioners in all fields of medicine need this educational series to help better the care of the patients that they see in everyday practice.

Objectives
Describe the bidirectional communication between the immune system, the brain and the gut microbiome - drawing on recent advances in neuroimmunology
Explain the role of inflammation in the pathophysiology of psychiatric presentations such as depression and psychosis, and identify clinical scenarios in which immune dysregulation may contribute to mental illness
Recognize the limitations of a strict mind-body dichotomy when evaluating chronic conditions that cross the 'mental' and 'physical' divide, including long-covid, ME/CFS, fibromyalgia and chronic pain conditions.
Apply an integrated defense-system framework to clinical assessment, and discuss emerging immunological, metabolic, and lifestyle-based approaches in immuno-psychiatry.
