Description

This presentation offers a practical approach to placental pathology, highlighting how careful examination of the placenta can provide valuable insights into pregnancy complications. We will review normal placental anatomy and histology, discuss when placental evaluation is indicated, and outline a systematic approach to gross and microscopic examination. Key placental lesions including maternal and fetal vascular malperfusion, inflammatory processes and abnormal implantation disorders, will be explored, with a focus on their diagnostic features and clinical significance.

Objectives

1)Describe the normal gross and microscopic anatomy of the placenta

2)Recognize the indications for pathologic placental examination.

3)Apply a systematic approach to placental gross examination, tissue sampling, and histopathologic evaluation in routine pathology practice.

4)Identify and interpret major placental pathologic lesions
